I'm also going to be getting a set of their new version (not yet available, but mentioned in my review) pretty soon, so if you'd like I'll share my experiences about those as well.

Please check out this brochure I put together to help my son Douglas

 Douglas Brochure.pdf (Size: 890.07 KB / Downloads: 5)

You may know him, or may have seen him in my skating videos. Doug is an outstanding young man. He is an Honor roll student. He is charismatic, and a role model for other students in his grade (7).

He has an I.Q. of 153. He is the real deal when it comes to smarts. His MCT test scores were literally almost off the charts.

His test scores qualified him to take the ACT (college entry) test at the 7th grade level through a program that Duke University has called Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program) 20 students in the district qualified to take the ACT. 7 actually did. Of those seven, three scored at a level equal to a high school senior in at least one category.
Doug's scores were 24,22,23,24 for a final score of 23.

The great news: Doug has been accepted by the University of Southern Mississippi for their summer 2012 program and will study Forensic Science.

The problem: My wife and I only have until May 31st to raise the tuition. We cannot do it on what we earn, so we are appealing to others for help. We still lack about $1,400. We have already gotten some donations, but we desparately need more to get this kid the education he deserves.

Please be a part of his success. I'm asking you to help someone who is doing all he can to help himself and needs the help of others as well.

If you have the means to help at all, please PM me for my address where you can mail a check or money order, or PayPal anything you can spare to reserector@mississippi-mud.com

Guys, he REALLY wants to do this. I am not one to ask for help, but I WILL ask you to help Douglas.

And whether or not you can help, please bring this to the attention of anyone who may be able and willing to help. Cross-post it elsewhere. Put me in touch with organizations that can help. I am not above any assistance at this point.

Question. The toe stop adjustment screw and the king pin adjustment nuts on my avenger magnesium plates are rusting is this normal? I don't ever skate in the rain, and take my skates out of my bag after practice, so not sure what is causing it. Any ideas?
I put this on the sure grip page as well as a question, because I was out when I noticed it and only had my phone so couldn't e-mail, so I will see what they say...But has anyone else experienced this?

When I started back to skating a few years ago, there were hardly any adults skating at my local rink. In fact, there were hardly any kids there. Skating in this area was sucking wind.

That is the main reason I started SouthernSkater.com. It was to promote skating, primarily in the southern U.S. where skating is not so popular as it is in colder regions that have long winters.
The rink I visit regularly was old, and it looked it. It was dirty, and looked like it was falling apart. I had an opportunity to speak with the owner at great length one day, and I shared my viewpoint as a patron. He listened and reacted with improvements to the interior, lighting, sound, rental skate maintenance, and much more. Since that time I have seen an increase in attendance, but I am especially excited to see the increased attendance among adults.

Most are parents like me that started back because their kid dragged them to a birthday party at the rink. With a growing adult skating population, maybe an adult night is not such a pipe dream after all.

How is attendance where YOU skate? Improving, the same, or diminishing?

I skate like a nut during sessions. My style is fast, flashy, and I don't let up.
I stand out at my rink, and that leads to some really nice compliments. Sometimes from adults, but the kids really make my day when they share their thoughts with me.

During the dice game, the music stopped and I stopped under the number 1 by the DJ booth. A young boy skated up and stopped there as well. He looks right at me as says "You're awesome!" My heart melted as I humbly said "Thank you".

It happens allot, but it never gets old. I feel so blessed to be that guy that makes such a strong skating impression on these children. I can only hope that it inspires them to stick with skating throughout their lives.

I'm not bragging. I just wanted to share this because it keeps coming to mind and making me smile.

It also reminds me that I should take time to compliment those who impress and inspire ME. I kind word can go a long way.

So last night (as I am posting this early in the morning) I was skating doing the usual reffing thing, well at the end of the night the refs had free time so we were practicing with two refs being the 'pack' (they are the sr refs) and the new ones practicing outside rotation with them speeding up and slowing down.

They decided to slow down in one of the turns, which is pretty warped from a flood the rink had a bit ago, so I went to plow stop to slow down with them. My skate caught a warped board that was raised slightly, rolled my ankle and with a pop and crack I went down in a lot of pain.

I ended up going to the ER although I don't have insurance and can't really pay for it, guess I will be on a payment plan for a while, and turns out I snapped the Fibula (the non weight bearing bone) cleanly and am now soft cast and they say I will need to get it hard cast by a orthopedist. Estimated time of being layed up and away from skating 4-6 weeks. The fracture is closed at least so I may just leave it soft cast since I don't have the money for a specialist.

Hurrah for sucktasticness. Hope everyone else is doing better then me right now (Yea, not very hard to, I know)

A New Record of finding things Friday night. First off the floor was perfect...no condensation, no black junk to get on the wheels and no cones around where the fog machine drips. It was an older teenage group with a few younger kids thrown in and the speed was faster then normal. I skated until my legs about gave out and I found some weird stuff...a cushion with retainer and about 20' away the nut for it. And, two matching toe stops found about five minutes apart, numerous night sticks as usual and three small batteries...one of which caused me to lock up a wheel and put a mark on the floor. But the big thing was I saw a puff of paper (they had the lights out) and when I got to it found about 8 dollars in ones! When I left no one had claimed it yet but I hope they do.

I'm working on a blog where people can submit gear reviews for any sort of derby/skating gear (from kneepads to plates to wheels to booty shorts), and where people can ask for advice related to gear and get answers.
I hope for it to one day become a great resource for skates both new and experienced to be able to quickly access detailed reviews of any gear they might be thinking about buying, and for skaters to educate other skaters on gear they loved or hated.
Obviously, it's not something I can do on my own, because for this to work there needs to be a range of skater types and views, and there needs to be more gear covered than just the stuff I have personally experienced.
Therefore, I'm asking for some help. If you are able, can you please submit reviews for ANYTHING you have ever used in a derby setting? You can submit by clicking the little pencil in the upper right corner.

He drives up, presses the button and when asked for his order he says "I'd like a chile cheese coney, a cherry limeade, and a job application.
He told me that when he said he could skate, the manager couldn't get to his truck fast enough.

Supposedly, he is a sure thing as soon as his online application is done. I helped him fill that out this evening, so he should be employed soon. He can certainly skate. Apparently that counts for allot at that place. He has a good work ethic, so I expect him to do well.

More updates as I get them.... Wish him luck on his first job.

Okay...Need advice here, not sure if I'm just getting strung along but its pissing me off! Placed an order a week ago Friday morning for knee pads&wrist guards. Both were apparently in stock on the website. Got a call monday afternoon/night (the are PST I'm EST) that the wrist guards I ordered were not in stock. I called on Tuesday at 9am PST when they open, told them to just give me the other wrist guards (demons) instead and get it shipped. "Okay great will get that shipped today and process your refund for the difference". Great
Check the website that day, that night, the next day, no updates on shipping order is still "On Hold". Call Wednesday afternoon, talked to the "manager", asked whats happening, he said we called and were waiting to hear back from you about the out of stock wrist guards....GRRRR REALLY?!?!!?!?! explain I already called and talked to someone the day before, he said he wasn't in the office...well I know I talked to SOMEONE! Anyways. Okay all sorted, these will ship this afternoon...
Keep checking the tracking number Fed ex Tracking, no updates. Call Fedex Friday morning, package has NOT been shipped, just a label printed.....
Grrr again.....So call again on Friday. Talk to someone again. The order is sitting there? I dunno, but apparently it again was going out that day and I would have it by Tuesday....
Its still not showing its been picked up!!!!!!
Should I just say **** it and ask for a refund. I've had dealings with this company before, well kinda, it seems like they have three different websites under different names. I ordered from the one before, they shipped my order, sent me the wrong knee pads because the ones I ordered were out of stock, then it was a fight to get everything sorted out. I didn't realize at the time that this site was part of that other one.........
Anyways....what should I do...I'm pissed....I think they will loose it if I call again today but this is getting old, real, real quick! I custom make skirts for people and my turn around time is only 1 or 2 days! They can't even pack and ship my order from their warehouse in over a week!!!

Hello all,

My name is Emma, and I'm from Essex in the UK. Some of you may recognise me from Skatelog.

I am almost 39, and have only been skating since February - before that, my last time on skates was back in the glorious 80's on a pair of Roces street quads.

I joined a new Derby league in March, and I'm loving every minute! We only train once a week at present, but I also go to a local rink once a week to get extra practice in!

I'm already nursing my first Derby injury - a badly bruised tailbone from a bad landing practising jumps! But it's not stopping me skating!

I currently have Rebel Avengers, but due to my extremely wide feet, have a pair of custom Bont's on order with Mag Avenger plates. Yes - a big outlay for a freshie, but I really want comfortable skates!

Looking forward to learning more on the forum - I'm already known as the skate expert amongst my freshmeat group - I seem to be the only one who's done any research about skates!!

When you mention roller skating to friends, family, and coworkers, how do they react?

In this area of Mississippi, the common perception is that roller skating is something for the kids. Lock-ins and Birthday parties, mainly. A place for parents to drop off the kids while they shop, or do naughty things.

Some reminisce about when they used to skate as kids. Most just humor me. You can see mow much their thoughts affect what I do, right?
