I skated on a "new" surface last night, and I only mean that it was new because it was something I had never skated on before, so I figured I'd start this thread and see what surfaces everyone has skated on, whether they're mostly "normal" or if we have a few oddballs out there. Also, let us know what you thought of each surface.

I'll start it off:

asphalt - Outdoor, grippy. I'm not a big fan of outdoor skating, the vibrations kill my legs and I haven't found a soft wheel to help with the vibration that I like.

concrete - I've encountered concrete outdoors and run into some of the same issues as asphalt. I've also found it in the warehouses that a lot of derby leagues skate on for practice and although it's usually smoother, you cannot keep it clean and it puts a lot of junk on your wheels. There's also the polished concrete that some rinks use. This tends to be a little slick.

Wood - In my opinion the best of all floors to skate on. Whether it's an old floor or a brand new floor you can usually get quite a bit of grip no matter what wheel combo you use................unless............I skated on a basketball court last night reffing a junior exhibition bout last night and that had to have been the slickest floor I have ever skated on. I use Sure-Grip Zooms (96a durometer I think) and I was all over the place with every pushoff, even with little effort. I honestly think I may have had more grip using my quads on ice.

Anyway, these are my opinions, and they may differ from everybody else's. I'm just curious as to what surfaces everyone has encountered and what they've thought of it.

It wasn't a problem when it was hot out but since the weather has changed I have big a problem with wheel junk. I now average between an hour/hour and a half before my wheels become un-skateable. I get black yuk wrapped all around the wheels and they thump. There are little sheets of the stuff peeled off other wheels laying all over the rink floor that I try to avoid. When I get home I spray Simple Green cleaner on them and the stuff melts off and I just wipe the wheels clean with a cloth.
My question is how do you guys handle this problem? Is there a good way to clean the wheels at the rink? (I guess that's two questions)

Jessikah (Sawwed-Off Shottie) is a derby skater here in Mississippi. She skates for Hub City Derby Dames out of Hattiesburg. We often skate the Sunday session at Petal Roller dome, and like several of the local derby skaters, we have become rink friends.

She is using a pair of Reidell Vixens. It is a 126 boot with plastic Powerdyne plates. One of her plates broke at the front pivot and is now useless. Her boots are fine, so she just wants plates to get her back in the game.

Her league doesn't have anyone who does plate mounting, so she turned to me. I told her I would try to come up with plates and mount them. She will pay for the plates, but has no real budget for this. She would be happy with anything that will get her going again.

I'm looking for sturdy plates with a 5 1/2" wheel base or a little shorter. Maybe down to a 5". I would love to hook her up with a DA45, but that is not a necessity.

What have y'all got that you can part with?

I don't think the lady was hurt real bad and they didn't call the squad this time. I didn't see it happen but a floor guard saw it and she said the lady did the splits...ouch!!!
We have been short on conversation here as of late. If you have something in mind that you would be willing to start a thread about, please do. Off-topic is fine as well. Let's just not lose our momentum. Our site grows with our input. YOUR input.
Even if it is something that may have been discussed in the past. Little detail stuff. Public relations. The history or future of roller skating. Seeminly simple questions. Let it rip, because that's what Southern Skater forums were created for.
Besides, the more you post, the cooler you are. Everybody knows that.

The last time I went to the rink was before Christmas. Every weekend it is something else that I can't get out of. Holiday stuff with work and church. Working on my son's truck in an effort to get it painted. We were almost ready to paint it when the engine went out.
We just got the new engine in and running tonight. Once again, didn't go skating.

I have an off-road trip coming up that I have to get ready for because I am hosting it. Then I need to do some repairs and modifications to my truck for a six day Arizona desert run in March. Somewhere along the line I need to paint his truck.

It's been hard to skate the driveway lately because of the winter weather. Also just plain tiredness.

It seems like an unbreakable rut at times. I suppose I need to just say enough is enough and lace up the skates and hit the driveway for at least a few laps.

I love that my life is so full. I just don't like that I have to give up one thing to do anotherl.

Hi everyone,

I'm Wendy and live in New Zealand. Just started derby a few months ago. I'll have my first bout next month, which is kinda scary but exciting at the same time!
At the moment I've got Rock GT-50 skates. They were good for the freshmeat training but aren't cutting it now lol. Found a nice Bont skate minus the wheels so doing a bit more research on which wheels to get. There's so many to choose from! Looking at Atom G-rods. Any advice would be great! We train on sport court (I think) and generally bout on wooden floors.

I check the roll of my wheels & bearings very often and I've been noticing that certain wheels roll slower so I take out the bearings and to my surprise one of the bearings (outer, side closest to nut) rolls slow. I notice that the rubber shield is indented in so I take it off & flatten it back out, voila it spins again.

The bearings I use are Mini-Logo (1 metal shield, 1 rubber shield); they spin smooth & quick (when the shield isn't bent). I tighten my wheels until there is a slight jiggle, because I notice that the wheel spins slower if I tighten it anymore. Now, I've noticed that the bent shield only happen in the rear wheels (outer bearing).

I'm trying something right now: using small washers that will space the nut from the bearing and it seems to work fine for now.
